What a real HVAC tune-up includes

It depends entirely what is in it. A genuine tune-up measures things; if nobody took a reading, nothing was actually verified.

The short answer

It depends entirely what is in it. A genuine tune-up measures things; if nobody took a reading, nothing was actually verified.

  • A real tune-up produces numbers: refrigerant pressures, temperature split, static pressure, electrical readings.
  • Combustion equipment adds safety checks that are not optional — heat exchanger inspection and CO testing.
  • Fifteen minutes with a clipboard and no instruments is an inspection at best, and often a sales call.
  • Ask what is measured and ask to see the readings. A contractor doing the work properly will not mind.

Is a $49 tune-up real?

The honest answer to the price question

A low advertised price is not automatically a scam, and a high one is not automatically thorough. The price tells you almost nothing on its own. What matters is the scope — what gets measured, and whether you are shown the results.

The reason cheap tune-ups have a reputation is that some are structured as a way to get a technician in front of you rather than as work in their own right. That is a business model, not a maintenance visit.

What should actually be measured

On cooling: refrigerant pressures and superheat or subcooling, the temperature split across the evaporator coil, static pressure across the air handler, and electrical readings on the compressor and motors.

On heating: the same electrical and airflow checks, plus combustion analysis on gas equipment, a heat exchanger inspection, and carbon monoxide testing.

Those last two are safety items rather than efficiency items. A cracked heat exchanger can put combustion products into the air you breathe, which is exactly the failure that a visual-only visit will miss.

How to tell which one you got

Ask what was measured and what the numbers were. A technician who took readings can tell you, and will usually be pleased to be asked.

If the answer is that everything 'looked good' with no figures attached, nothing was verified — and if a replacement quote appears at the end of a visit where nothing was measured, that sequence is worth noticing.
