What the Symptom Usually Means
It hums but will not turn
Something is jammed against the impellers. The motor is drawing current and going nowhere, which will trip the overload — and keep tripping it until the obstruction is cleared. Repeatedly resetting it is how a working disposal becomes a dead one.It does nothing at all
Usually the overload has tripped, occasionally the switch or the outlet has failed, and sometimes the motor has genuinely burnt out. These are quick to tell apart and only one of them needs a new unit.It drains slowly
This is very often not the disposal. A disposal discharges into the same trap and branch line as the rest of the sink, and a partial blockage downstream shows up first at the disposal side because that is where the most solids go.It leaks
Where it leaks matters. The sink flange, the dishwasher inlet, the discharge elbow and the body seam all leak differently and only one of those means the unit is finished.It smells
Odour is almost always residue in the grinding chamber or the baffle rather than a fault. If it persists after cleaning, we look at the trap and venting.Repair or Replace
